Artist Statement | Waiting Room
In Waiting Room, a quilted figure becomes a human-sculpture beneath fluorescent light in a staged GP clinic. It is both witness and patient, seen and obscured. The figure might be the elephant in the room, but it's been sitting there for so long that at first glance, perhaps it no longer jumps out because it made itself a home there. The artist was interested in invisible suffering, pain, otherness, and the experience of slipping into daydreams waiting for medical answers, perhaps for days, nights and years.
The work explores these questions with softness and absurdity through an assemblage of personally significant textiles and pyjamas. Quietly disassociating, calm, distant and becoming part of the furniture, the figure is present yet absent as it occupies a space designed to care, but has in itself, become an in between space perpetuating a constant diagnostic limbo.
