Into the Rabbit Hole

This series delves into the artist’s uncertain relationship between her body and external environment during her ongoing battle with endometriosis.

Evoking a surreal, soft, yet disconcerting world…

Jess Coldrey invites viewers to see beyond the surface of the disease. Coldrey vividly portrays the contradictions and complexities of her personal journey using contemporary quilts and surreal digital imagery.

Her latest collection focuses on personally sentimental fabrics like pillows, cushions, and pyjamas. These materials served as anchors, providing a sense of safety and calmness as pain transformed her inner state, rendering the external world unrecognisable.

Simultaneously, alien landscapes reflect the isolation and coldness she experienced in medical spaces during her diagnosis. Digital prints developed alongside artificial intelligence resuscitate these worlds with texture, colour and touch as she maps them back to her body.
